The Value Of A Good Stylist ='s Good Hair

Technique Tuesday

How Everybody Can Have Good Hair

Welcome back… and thank you for reading today’s blog post. It’s “Technique Tuesday and we are about to CHOP it up with ya girl… The Kitchentician. In today’s blog we will discuss the VALUE of a good stylist… being equal to having good hair.
Last week we discussed the history of where the Natural Hair Care movement began. How many cultures addressed having natural hair as a privilege and a symbol of honor and beauty. This is why today we are discussing the value of a good stylist. There are plenty of people today that are taking the natural hair care industry by storm. These same people are good at what they do as a stylist… but are they good as natural hair caretakers? I have heard of some wacky techniques to create the illusion of “good hair.” And just so you know… that good hair is beyond ethnicity as so it is more about proper hair care itself. So let’s CHOP it up about some of the tacky techniques that are creating the dawn of the bad hair days!!!
natural hair

The first one is using vaginal cream in order to promote hair growth; Monistat 7  to be exact. The only thing that I am aware that Monistat products are good for is vaginal yeast infection, but from what I understand, it allegedly helps to promote a better scalp, in order to allow hair to grow easily through the follicle. I have to admit that in my curiosity I watched a few YouTube videos and I was shocked. Women were so excited about this new craze that they endured painful side-effects that ultimately caused critical follicle damage. This my friend is NOT a notable technique to use. I ain’t the one to gossip… but you can take this from me… a 13-year Master Barber/Stylist... Licensed Professional.

The second one is the ex all time favorite of a few of my clients… co-washing.
I can not stress enough that CONDITIONER is only to be used after a good stimulating shampoo. The problem with co-washing is that it does not cleanse the hair. First off… learn to follow the directions that are on the back of the bottle. What it states on the label… is what it needs to be used for. If the conditioner says, “after cleansing hair and scalp with shampoo, then apply conditioner from root to ends… leave in for 3-5 minutes then rinse,” then this is what you should do. The only type of conditioner that you should leave in your hair is one that says… “Leave-In Conditioner.”

This is just a couple of faulty techniques that I would steer clear from… Unless you want to experience what is known as an involuntary Big CHOP.

Now here are a couple of “good” techniques that you can use in order to grow and maintain “good hair.” They are simple, tried, and true. So here they are…
The first one is to get a good hair bush (boar bristle) and a wide tooth comb for detangling. You would want to part the hair into 4 sections… using the t-shape ear-to-ear and naper-to-neck. The trick for those who suffer from dry scalp can add  a little ACV (apple cider vinegar)… a tablespoon will do it to balance the ph of the hair and scalp… thus softening the hair, making it more managble. The other trick is to also use a light oil such as grape seed oil or safflower oil to coat the hair to ensure a smooth comb out during the conditioning process. A dime size will work for each section of hair.

The second part is to brush at least 100 times a day. Hair brushing is natural stimulant and will ultimately promote lustrous, strong, shiny hair. Don’t take my word for it… The proof is in the pudding ~ 100% natural hair care techniques… that works.

So know that… a good head of hair is only as good as the advise and good advise is only as accurate as the expertise.

How One Heavy Hitter Stylist Takes Natural Hair Care Back Into The Kitchen

Natural Hair Care Heavy Hitter

Today we're here to set it off with Technique Tuesday, @ The CHOP Shop...
Where Curly Hair... IS ...Our Passion
Thank you for stopping by today to twist, curl, and loc up with Tuesday's Technique. As with any form of expertise, having the proper techniques is a heavy hitter. If you know anything about natural hair... you know that it is a ever rising culture among many cultures... especially within the Black African American community and abroad. Natural hair gained it's sassy cultural appeal way back prior to any of the cultural indifferences that many are faced with here today. Yet the heavy hitter is that we are not as prideful as we we're in the past. What use to be of great cultural significance, has now become a boggled group of self proclaimed professionals, spreading the wrong message and information about Natural Hair.
Many of the heavy hitters within the movement of Natural Hair are doing so to establish a concrete sense of pride and wonder, about the community of what was, and has now become again. With all of the beautiful textures and curl patterns among us, there is no silver bullet that has been designed to annihilate the history of natural hair power.
Just imagine all those men and women who wore royal headdresses to signify their deity or spiritual consciousness. Hair is and has always been elevated for social and aesthetic reasons, but its spiritual connection also served to heighten its significance. Many Africans believed the hair a way to communicate with the Divine Being. According to Mohamed Mbodj, an associate professor of history at Columbia University and a native of Dakar, Senegal, “the hair is the most elevated point of your body, which means it is the closest to the divine.”

The Signifying Heavy Hitter

Historic Heavy Hitter
Consequently, many thought communication passed through the hair. Many believed a single strand of hair could be used to cast spells or inflict harm. This explains why hairdressers held and still hold prominent positions within the community today. For those who do not know, styling and grooming black hair is often complicated and time consuming. That is why with the proper techniques and training salon hours can be reduced and so can overhead. The time spent at the hairdresser often results in close bonds between the stylist and the client. It is important to note that unkempt hair was largely unseen, as were scarves and "head-wraps,” within history.  Therefore, one can conclude that the hair was not meant to be covered, but adored and highly praised.
Makes me wonder how did we get away from such a social significance? Was it that practicing healthy hair care etiquette became too expensive? Or... Was it the evolution of time that moved us along to where we are now... Leaning back to the basics or even redefining the basics. That is why after 14 years in the field, I am taking my expertise back to where it all began... In the kitchen...
Today's Heavy Hitter

So whether you subscribe to natural hair or not... the first step to understanding the beauty of it all is in the history... And that is the basis of any technique. First we must ask where did the idea originate? Then we can examine how to preserve the beauty of our culture and freedoms today.
Now as we celebrate how far we have journeyed, we can arise finding ourselves heading back home, to where it all began... With your community heavy hitter, The Kitchentician.
